The audience laughed, but few others did. In fact, Jennifer’s use of the outdated characterization is nothing to joke about, say disability advocates — who are chiding the former Friend for her poor choice of words.
“Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don’t realize it. People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it’s hurtful,” says Kirsten Seckler, a spokeswoman for the Special Olympics. “Think before you speak especially when you’re making fun of yourself or others. We have a very passionate group of people advocating for change in their communities and schools to change the use of this word.”
